Who are we?
DISABILITY SOCIAL CLUB is the first Well-Being program by Disabilty Social Community Interest Company.
Founded by Ben & Sasha Lindsay, siblings that decided to drive the Social Model of Disability.
“People are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference.”
Ben was born with Cerebral Palsy, yet he has always loved life, family & socialising. However this is where the problem came in!
All of the social activities he participated in where during the day, for a couple of hours and usually provided through funding. This meant that activities were often cut, or only offered for a short period of time, making it very hard to make lasting friendships.
Ben is a typical kind of guy. He loves football, the pub, movies and having a good time. Although he tries to get out & about, there is often a lot of restrictions regarding access, transport, toilets, even seating.
Hence the creation of the DISABILITY SOCIAL CLUB.
Where are you?
The club is based at Beckenham Public Halls.
We are accessible from many of the local surrounding areas, such as Lewisham, Croydon, Lambeth, Westminster & Southwark.
The venue has wheelchair access, accessible toilets, a lift and amazing staff, including Laura whom has supported us and our idea from the beginning.
Is it for me?
The club is open to adults from 18 years and up, regardless of your disability, however everyone is welcome, walkers too!
The only criteria to attend is to:
Respect our Code of Conduct
Want a more fulfilling social life
Have the Mental Capacity to make your own decisions
Attendees and Members are entitled to bring a Carer for general support (or Personal Care) if required. However we have SOCIAL BUDDIES on hand to assist, to ensure you have fun in a relaxed and safe environment.
Why should I go?
We want disabled people to feel that they belong, that they have a place to go out in the evening and not have to feel like the odd one out, or that special arrangements have to be made just to be included.
I have more questions!
Office Hours are Mon-Fri 10am-2pm
(We DO NOT provide Personal Care. If you require assistance please bring a Carer)
(Please note our office is not based at Beckenham Public Halls)
